Assembling the Ethernet Article

January 30, 2007

Each member in the class should look through all the posted sections under the comments of the previous post and put together the best article about Ethernet. Follow the order in the previous post.

Please do this by the end of the period. You’ll each get a grade on your independent work, although you are free to collaborate with others in the classroom. Oh, and don’t forget to include the extra-credit information about which layer or layers of the OSI Model that Ethernet acts on.

The important thing is that you learn this material while helping us build our own textbook. We’ll publish the best result on our Wikispaces website.

Making the Ethernet Article Simpler

January 26, 2007

Hey, I’ve got an idea. How about we break the Ethernet article into sections and have each row in the class take a different part? Here are the five sections:

  1. The history of Ethernet: Who, how, where, when, and why.
  2. What is Ethernet? How does it work?
  3. What are data frames? How are they put together?
  4. What is CSMA/CD and how does it help Ethernet work?
  5. What are the physical devices that Ethernet uses?

Anybody who wants to get some extra credit, please write a short explanation of which layer(s) of the OSI Model Ethernet operates on. We’ll add it on to the end of the article.

Go for it. And you know the drill: Turn your final product in as a comment. Everybody gets evaluated, but the best version ends up in our wiki textbook.

Your Ethernet Article

January 23, 2007

Use this post to turn in your article on Ethernet. Now, remember, this is a concise, tight but complete article on what Ethernet is, who invented it and when, and how it fits into the OSI MODEL of networking. Hint: It’s on the first, or physical, layer.

Post it in the comments section. Whoever writes or puts together the best article on Ethernet will have his or her article placed into our wiki textbook for The Basics of Computer Engineering.

After all the articles are turned in, we’ll all review them and pick the best one together. You’ll also earn points for your own contribution, whether we use it or not.

Making Network Cables

January 23, 2007

Today we’ll learn how to make our own network cables. We’ll need RJ45 jacks for each end and a length of Cat 5 cable.

To understand this better, Google for “how to make network cables” or “rj45 color code” or anything that comes to mind.

You also might try looking it up in howstuffworks.

So, do this research, and we’ll talk. As soon as you think you’ve got the how-to on making cables, let me know.

A Computer Class Slogan and a Quote

January 12, 2007

To help promote the Computer Technician Training class, please try to think up a great slogan for the class. Now, next year’s class is probably going to be called Entrepreneurship, but you can use Marketing instead if you wish.

Make the slogan catchy and short.

Also, give me a quick quote explaining why you enjoy the Marketing class and what you are getting from it.

Send this to me in a comment.

Thanks!

Researching DOS Commands

January 10, 2007

This Morning, let’s get on the Internet to search for:

  1. The origin of DOS commands. What are they and where did they come from?
  2. In today’s Windows environment, where can we execute DOS commands?
  3. What are the most popular or useful DOS commands? Try to list ten.

When you find the answers to these questions, submit them as a single comment to this post. Number your answers 1, 2, 3. I’ll be monitoring the queue. The best submission may end up as the beginning of our wiki textbook on Wikispaces.
