What’s left to learn this year

April 30, 2007

Here’s the rundown of what we’ll do for the last five weeks of school:

Learn to use Partition Magic

Install and configure Linux

Set up a wireless network

Review everything we learned this year (final project)

This final project, I hope, will be a lot of fun. I want us to show what we’ve learned while practicing a number of multimedia techniques to create presentations by teams of:

Taking a computer apart–showing that we know the names of all parts–and putting it back together

Installing software and security services

Partitioning and installing a second OS (Linux)

Networking the computers

Setting up a wireless network

This will culminate in presentations for the last three days of school, including the final. It will be a huge part of your grade — 25 percent of your final third of the semester.

By the way, we can use podcasts, still photos, and video in our presentations, and we’ll practice creating and later embedding these into our PowerPoint presentations.

NTHS — Finish your Network Study Guide and…

April 20, 2007

…add 8 more entries:

1. The history and purpose of the OSI model.

2. thru 8. Explain what the seven layers of the OSI model are and what they do.

Be concise but complete.

I expect everyone to turn in a complete Network Study Guide at the beginning of class Monday.

Thanks and be kind to the sub.

Work on your Network Study Guide (special to NTHS)

April 16, 2007

Because of the Star testing schedule, I’m tied up at VHS. I had planned already to have you work on the Network Study Guide, which is available in the Comp Tech Training folder on the S: drive, as well as a link here on the Blog in the Links on the right. Fill out the Study Guide just as you did with the Computer Technician Study Guide last semester. It’s a good review of stuff you’ve learned or will learn as we finish up our Networking studies. Save your work as a Microsoft Word document. I’ll have you turn it in later. Thanks.
