OSI Model Presentation Project

February 21, 2008

OSI Reference Model

Now that we’ve been looking at and discussing the OSI Model for a couple of weeks now, it’s time for you to create a PowerPoint presentation that explains the Model in depth. So, we’ll break up into teams of 4 students. First, I’ll pick a team builder who will work with the other team builders to choose balanced teams. A balanced team means that each team will have all the skills needed. So we need to be careful to include a new student in each team, so that the ones who haven’t been here all year will get a helping hand.

Next, we’ll assign different roles for each member and break up the work in equal parts so that no student has to do more than his or her share.

Next, we get started. The required contents of the presentation are:

  • A good, concise description of the history and purpose of the OSI Model.
  • An explanation of the value of knowing about the OSI Model.
  • A clear presentation of what each layer in the Model is and does. Explain the hardware, software, or network protocols used at each layer.
  • Please include good text (words) and graphics (pictures).
  • Don’t forget to create (write) a good script or narrative for the spoken part of your presentation. Each team member must participate and have a spoken section. I recommend memorizing the script or knowing the material so well that you don’t need to read from a script. But definitely, don’t read from the slides except for the titles and headings on the slides.

Please be ready to present by next Thursday, February 28.

And remember: Share the work, share the learning.
